The Jaap Bakema Study Centre organized a special conference on the work of Jaap Bakema (1914-1981) and his idea to build towards an open society. Speakers included professor Tom Avermaete, professor Carola Hein (both TU Delft), professor Mark Swenarton (University of Liverpool) and Christoph Grafe, director of the Flemish Architecture Institute (VAi). The conference acted as a conclusion to the Dutch presentation for this year's Venice Biennale Open: A Bakema Celebration.
At the Venice Architecture Biennale 2014 Het Nieuwe Instituut introduced the public side of Bakema and his ideas for the open society in Open: A Bakema Celebration, while the presentation in Rotterdam – the city where he lived and worked for years – highlighted Bakema’s private life.
The Venice Architecture Biennale opened on Saturday 7 June. Director Rem Koolhaas has invited the curators of all national pavilions to present exhibitions that respond to the theme ‘Absorbing Modernity: 1914-2014’. On Thursday 19 June Het Nieuwe Instituut welcomes the curators of the Dutch and the British Biennale pavilions.
